October 26 – Social Media & the Law: Minimizing Risk & Maximizing Opportunity

Rarely does a day go by without a story related to the legality of behavior on social media platforms – and how practitioners have found themselves sideways.  Transparency, disclosure, compliance, defamation, copyright infringement and user-generated content – all part of the vernacular professional communicators now juggle daily.  As our socially networked opportunities proliferate, so do the legal intricacies we must be aware of to practice our craft in an ethical and compliant way.

Join PRSA Idaho for discussion about Social Media and the Law – what you need to do today in order to minimize your risk and maximize your opportunity.

Featured panelists include New Media Attorney Lisa McGrath of Lisa McGrath LLC, Dr. Seth Ashley from the Department of Communication at Boise State and Jessica Flynn of Red Sky PR.

Lisa McGrath runs an exclusive flat fee law firm that focuses on solving legal problems related to new media, technology, the Internet, and e-commerce.  McGrath is a graduate of American University, Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. She is a former litigator in private practice, United States Senate Counsel, and previous law clerk for the Chief Justice of the Idaho Supreme Court. McGrath is co-founder and program director of Social Media Club Boise.

Dr. Rick Moore, chair of the Department of Communications at Boise State University,  earned his doctorate from the University of Oregon and has taught at Boise State since 1994.  Dr. Moore’s research interests are in the area of mass communication and ideology. Much of his writing has investigated media portrayal of religious and environmental issues. Another key area of study is the social thought of Jacques Ellul, a French theorist/theologian who asked challenging questions about the role of technology in our lives. Writing under his full name of Rick Clifton Moore, Dr. Moore has published articles in: The Journal of Communication; Mass Media & Society; The Journal of Media and Religion; The Bulletin of Science, Technology, and Society; Advertising and Society Review; The Ellul Forum; and The Journal for Peace and Justice Studies.

Jessica Flynn is CEO of Red Sky Public Relations. Jessica’s strengths lie in her journalism roots, which enable her to ask the tough questions, seek creative solutions to communication challenges and incorporate multimedia and social elements into highly successful public relations campaigns on behalf of clients large and small, local and global.  She provides strategic counsel and has developed social media programming and training for clients including the Idaho Department of Commerce, Avery Dennison and Supervalu.
